What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a psychological therapy that uses art as the primary mode of expression and communication alongside talking with and being supported by an art therapist.

It can help to express emotions, process experiences and/or understand and work towards therapeutic goals.

The process of creating art is used to express, explore and manage what you’re feeling. There is no need to be 'good' at art.

During art therapy, you are supported by an art therapist to use art to express and articulate often complex thoughts and feelings through art making. This may be following difficult or traumatic experiences which may be hard to talk about or there simply aren't the words for.

Who is an Art Therapist?

An art therapist is someone who has done recognised training in Art Psychotherapy and is registered with the Health Professions Council Art therapists (HCPC).

An art therapist has received extensive training in working with people’s problems and distress, and has lots of experience using art materials in a therapeutic way.

Art therapists encourage you to work at a level comfortable for you and help to create a space where you feel safe and able to express yourself.
